Hidden away at the end of a quiet track through the Norfolk Fens, this remarkable site has been our client's home for many years. An expansive man-made lake, surrounded by mature native planting, creates an unexpected oasis within the open, flat landscape, offering a setting that feels both tranquil and deeply connected to nature.
The replacement dwelling has been carefully designed to respond to this unique environment. Its simple, barn-inspired form is arranged as a cruciform plan, with the living accommodation elevated above the flood level and orientated to embrace both the lake and the movement of the sun throughout the day. The principal living space reaches out towards the water, creating an ever-changing relationship with the landscape and capturing long views across the site.
A generous projecting roof forms a sheltered walkway along the western elevation, providing passive solar shading during the warmer months while extending beyond the house to create a cantilevered sitting area overlooking the lake. The result is a home that sits lightly within its setting, balancing resilience, sustainability and a strong connection to the landscape that has shaped our clients' lives for so many years.
